JOB PURPOSE: Equipment Operators operate underground construction equipment required to perform the installation, maintenance, relocation, or repair of underground telecommunications network infrastructure.
KEY FUNCTIONS: Operate various equipment including backhoe, mini-excavator, vibratory plow, and directional bore machine, for the installation or maintenance of underground utilities.
Properly clean and maintain the equipment, check fluid levels, and conduct a visual inspection of vehicle/equipment to assure your vehicle/equipment is performing at optimum safety, perform the required pre-trip, post trip inspections and the required reports.
Read and interpret site plans, construction drawings, and scope of work documentation.
Perform job site analysis and site walks, confirm trench/bore paths according to requirements and regulations.
Ensure proper clearances are in place to install products according to industry standards and company policies.
Ensure location of all existing utilities are properly identified on job sites.
Complete work functions as directed by project foreman and company leadership.
May be accountable for providing instructions to other personnel on site when foreman is not present.
Provide effective training of less experienced team members as needed.
Load, unload, and transport excavation equipment to/from job sites.
Possess knowledge of company safety program, practice and enforce safety rules and procedures to ensure the safety of our employees and our communities.
Wear safety apparel which includes but is not limited to hard hats, safety vests, and OSHA approved boots.
Operate and drive a Company vehicle in accordance with company’s “Use of Vehicle for Company Business” policy.
Follow and serve as a role model in displaying company’s Core Values and Leadership Success Drivers.
Adhere to company privacy guidelines to ensure each customer’s privacy.
Maintain regular attendance as required by your position.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: HS diploma, GED or a minimum of two years of equivalent work experience operating heavy equipment required.
Experience in operation of heavy equipment used in the installation of telecommunications infrastructure preferred.
Willingness to obtain and maintain a Class A CDL driver’s license with tanker endorsement preferred.
Working knowledge of construction, the National Electrical Code, OSHA regulations, state and local regulations and general safety standards.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or carry loads of up to 84 lbs.
The noise level in the work environment is moderate/high.
Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time and maneuver in small areas.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
The employee must be able to work in an outdoor environment year around in all weather conditions.
The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock, radiation, and vibration.
Employees may be required to work more than 40 hours per week and other than normal business hours, such as holidays, evenings, and weekends as business demands.
The employee could be required to travel up to 50% of flexible scheduled hours.
In addition to meeting the above Experience and Education, position leveling will be assigned congruent to experience and training: Job Level Position Requirements Equipment Operator Less than 1 year experience operating equipment.
Directional Bore, skid-steer, and mini-excavator operation competency obtained.
Equipment Maintenance and Safety Check compliance.
Equipment Operator I Minimum 2 years in role or equivalent experience.
Excavation and Trenching Competent Person Certification required.
EQ Operator requirements plus Directional Bore Tracking, Backhoe operation, or equivalent, Competency attained.
Read and Interpret site plans, construction drawings and SNOW.
Equipment Operator II Minimum 4 years in role or equivalent experience.
Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement.
EQ Operator I requirement plus Plow, CAT, and CAT-VAC operation, or equivalent, Competency attained.
Equipment Operator III Minimum 6 years in role or equivalent experience.
Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement.
Equipment II requirements plus Large Plow, Crawler, or equivalent, Competency attained.
