Position Overview:
A Principal Engineering Technician will have broad and deep technical knowledge including troubleshooting of system components and their interactions with the overall system of interest.
A Principal Engineering Technician will provide input to the engineering team on functionally, reliability, manufacturability and maintainability of system components.
The Principal Engineering Technician may make design improvements and changes to improve system life.
Responsibilities:
Provide documentation, training, troubleshooting procedures, and advanced support for difficult or systemic problems
Collect operating data and solve technical problems using root cause analysis and testing equipment such as DVM, logic analyzer, and storage oscilloscope
Interpret electronic device data sheets, understand electronic hardware schematics, and identify component purpose
Work with Digi-Key and 3rd party teams to assist in system designs, installations, and upgrades
Perform the following: wiring, assembly, firmware development, electrical testing, controls troubleshooting and debug
Identify work tasks to complete a project, plan the work, and complete the work as planned
Act as a resource and provide technical guidance to other engineering technicians
Education and Experience
High School diploma or equivalent
Associates degree in technical field such as electrical or mechanical engineering technology or related field preferred.
Typically 10-16 years of experience
Ability to interpret electronic device data sheets and proficient understanding of electronic hardware schematics
Previous experience troubleshooting electronic hardware issues and proficient at operating test equipment such as DVM, logic analyzer, and storage oscilloscope
Collects operating data and solves technical problems using data and analytical thinking
Experience in developing and debugging microcontroller firmware
Understands microcontroller functional blocks and peripherals of MCU with Microchip MCU experience preferred
Familiar with board level communication interfaces like I2C, SPI, UART, and general purpose I/O
Maintains and creates system documentation for products designed or improvements made
Interacts with users and elevates to Digi-Key engineers or 3rd party suppliers as needed
Seek guidance from senior staff when needed
Monitors downtime, problems, documents and analyzes problems and publishes any maintenance schedule for systems
Understanding of business function related to the systems
Physical Requirements:
Generally, spend the workday sitting at a workstation and operating computer devices, such as, but not limited to keyboard, mouse and screen
Generally, spend the workday performing repetitive motions that involve or affect the hands, head, and other parts of your body
