Purpose of Position
The purpose of the position is to provide academic advisement, recruitment, and retention to undergraduate students at the University of North Dakota.
This position helps to advise any/all undergraduate majors and minors.
Academic advisors help to serve the needs of the Core Advising team as well as any unmet student needs across campus.
Academic advisors will utilize Campus Connection (Academic Requirement Reports), Degree Map, and Starfish to advise and interact with students regularly.
Advisors will attend commencement ceremonies and other student success programming.
Duties & Responsibilities
Provide academic, advanced degree program, and career advising for current on campus and online undergraduate programs assigned to including knowledge of all degree requirements
Meet with students on an appointment and walk-in basis to the Student Academic Success & Career Engagement Office
Advise incoming students during new student advising and registration
Understand needs of various student populations (e.
g.
, online, military-affiliated, athletes, international, and otherwise diverse student backgrounds)
Understanding and appropriate use of various advising models
Participation in assessment of advising
Meet with prospective and transfer students interested in the university and programs assigned to
Collaborate with departments of programs assigned to address advising needs for the department
Write letters of recommendation for students and serve as a reference for students as needed
Understand, utilize, and accurately communicate policies, procedures, technology/tools, and resources to advisees
Understand institutional specific policies and procedures such as term dates and deadline, ES petition, Ad Pro petition, withdraw processes, graduation application, changes of major, collaborative course processes, readmission and reinstatement processes, academic grievance processes, etc.
Understand program/college/University goals for retention and graduation
Basics of financial aid
Career exploration tools (e.
g.
, FOCUS 2, Academic and Career Exploration, career services events, pairings of degree options, graduate or professional degree options)
Campus resources and services
Advising technology including Campus Connection, Civitas products as used at UND, and others as determined necessary in the completion of effective general advising
Student technology including student use of Blackboard and Handshake
Participation in student centered events, professional development, and other duties as assigned
Participation in graduation ceremonies
Participation in recruitment fairs, prospective student and guest visits, welcome weekend/meetings, etc.
Attend on campus workshops for professional development
Participate in college and campus-wide advising events and outreach
Yearly participation in regional/national advising professional development opportunities
Provide assistance to other advisors and their students as needed for extended leaves and absences
Other duties as assigned by SASCE or college(s) affiliated with majors assigned

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree
Experience advising undergraduate students
Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
