Purpose of Position
The Department of History & American Indian Studies at the University of North Dakota invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of History to begin in August 2024.
We seek a colleague who will continue our department’s commitments to teaching excellence, furthering scholarship on North Dakota and the Northern Plains, and engaging diverse public audiences.
Established in 1883, the University of North Dakota is the oldest research university in the state.

Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will teach five courses per year.
The offerings will be a combination of in-person on-campus and asynchronous online courses, and they will include the following: the United States in the long 20th century, History of North Dakota, and historical methods.
The successful candidate also will maintain an active research agenda, participate in shared faculty governance and service, and contribute to the UND LEADS Strategic Plan through a commitment to strong teaching, community service, and meaningful scholarly activity.

Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
Minimum Requirements
Earned PhD in History or related field at the time of application.
Successful completion of a Standard Criminal History Background Check
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching in-person and asynchronous online courses in History.
Experience teaching about diverse perspectives and populations within the United States in the long 20th century.
Experience with public history and/or public engagement in History.
A research agenda that includes and anticipates professional presentations and publications in peer-reviewed outlets.
Experience with scholarly historical organizations, particularly those associated with North Dakota and the Northern Plains.
