JOB SUMMARY *Provide patient care within established policies, procedures, and standards and should adhere to the Nurse Practice Act and policies of Kittson Healthcare.
* * Use a systematic approach of the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) in the care of patients.
* Responsible to maintain a safe environment for the patient.
* Safeguard the patient’s right to privacy by maintaining confidentiality.
* Assume responsibility for actions taken in the course of nursing practice as well as for actions delegated to others assisting in the delivery of patient care.
*EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:* * Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
* Must have the ability to work well with patient and other health related personnel.
* Must demonstrate the ability to work accurately under pressure and deal with changing and unexpected situations.
* Must have the ability to move quickly from one task to another.
*EDUCATION & TRAINING:* * Must have completed and graduated from an approved/accredited Registered Nurse program and obtained registration.
* Must maintain continuing education and keep skills current.
* Must have current CPR certification.
*EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS (preferred):* *Previous experience as a Registered Nurse * Certification of Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
*Required Licensure/Registration/Certification:* * Must uphold and maintain current licensure by the Minnesota Board of Nursing.
*SPECIAL SKILLS:* * Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
* Must obtain and maintain ACLS certification along with CALS or TNCC.
* Must be able to work independently and/or effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
*POSITION SUMMARY* *RESPONSIBILITIES:* * Prepare nursing care plans daily.
* Make out daily patient assignments.
* Accompany physician on rounds (answer questions, receive instructions, and note patient care requirements.
Acts as a patient advocate).
* Provide nursing care: assesses, plans, implements, evaluates.
* Administers prescribed medications and treatments.
* Evaluate and document response to prescribed medications and treatments.
* Assist physicians in procedures and treatments.
* Report condition of patients to oncoming Charge Nurse.
* Accounts for narcotics.
* Maintain responsibility for medication room.
* Will assist in Emergency room.
May assist in operating room and CSR as needed.
* Answer patient call lights.
* Identify environmental safety hazards (i.
e.
, patients requiring isolation, universal precautions, maintain aseptic technique).
* Orientate co-workers and ancillary departments.
* Will complete the following tasks as they pertain to charting: * Complete admission assessment record within four hours of patient arrival.
* Assess patients on admission for risk factors.
* Document system assessment every shift and as patient’s condition changes.
Review and validate assessments by LPN.
* Identify and chart patient/family teaching needs and determine teaching approach, utilizing available resources.
* Compile discharge instructions.
* Authorize treatment signature and witness (i.
e.
, face sheet or E.
R.
record).
* Initiate patient’s care plan within 24 hours of admission.
* Take charge of Code Blue and manage situation per ACLS protocol.
* Participate in quality assurance as assigned.
* Participate in infection control as assigned.
* Attend monthly staff meetings and in-service opportunities that would enhance service to patients.
* Maintain patient confidentiality.
* Administer IV medications for the Nursing Home when RN not on staff in the Nursing Home.
* Administer oxygen and maintain treatments.
* Direct care given by team members and provide day to day leadership and supervision of nursing staff.
* Display knowledge of scientific and legal principles.
* Act as a liaison among physicians, patient and/or family, and the health care team.
* Actively participate in Kittson Healthcare Hospital and Nursing Home programs (i.
e.
, CPR education, mandatory meetings, QA/QI program, Infection Control program, Safety program, etc.
).
* Contribute to the professional climate of the department and to increase individual growth.
* Act as a role model to others.
* Maintain a safe environment for staff, patients, and visitors by promoting safety policies.

* Cooperate with other departments in resolving problems.

*MENTAL DEMANDS:* * Must be able to work under mental stress due to heavy work schedules, dealing with a variety of people, rotating shifts, and changing and unexpected situations.
* Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively.
* Must be able to do arithmetic, calculate drug dosages, and work with military time.
* Must possess emotional stability and maturity in performance of duties.
* Must be able to perform a high degree of mind/eye coordination in order to perform technical skills and procedures in a stressful environment.
*PHYSICAL DEMANDS:* * Work involves lifting, stooping, reaching, and long periods of standing.
* Must have the ability to lift moderate weight up to 40-50 pounds and be able to bend and use legs for lifting.
Anything over 50 pounds requires a two-man lift or use of mechanical lift.
* Must have adequate sight and hearing to detect changes in patient’s condition to assure accuracy in carrying out responsibilities.
* Work requires good coordination and dexterity.
