The Boiler Technician 1 is the highest position in the Boiler Technician Training Program, which is designed to develop highly skilled employees responsible for factory power generation through the safe and efficient operation of boiler and turbine equipment.
Successful applicants will be placed initially at the level of Boiler Technician 3.
Employees may then advance in the Program to Boiler Technician 2 and Boiler Technician 1 based on training, skills, successful job performance, and completion of related assessments and license requirements.
License Required: • Minimum of MN Boiler 1-A license Job Requirements: PRE-HIRE QUALIFICATIONS: MN Boiler 1-A license and successful industrial work experience as a Boiler Operator High School Diploma or GED certificate is required Must pass pre-hire mechanical aptitude test and basic skills tests in reading and math Individuals are required to submit to and successfully pass a Safety Screen that evaluates their ability to safely execute duties and tasks of this position.
Must be able to reference, read and understand how to use SDS information.
Must be able to obtain forklift certification.
Boiler Technician 3 Major Duties: MN Boiler 1-A license required Operates boiler(s) and turbine generator(s), makes necessary changes to the operation as needed/required to ensure operations conform to ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) and NBIC (National Board Inspection standards Operates boiler feedwater pumps, fans, and turbine Performs turbine generator rounds & weekly testing/routines Operates & maintain chemical treatment systems and water softeners Enters coal & water chemistry log information into Labvantage Completes environmental rounds & signs environmental report Switches feed water pumps Operates the steam turbine(s) Cleans the turbine/generator room Completes SOP reading assignments as scheduled Operates the Reducing stations Other duties as assigned and works overtime as required.
Boiler Technician 2 Major Duties: Responsible for all Boiler Technician 3 duties Responsible for startup and shutdown of the boilers and turbine(s) Understands how to by-pass the turbine generator if/when needed Understands how to switch turbine operation as needed Understands how to maximize and optimize boiler efficiency Provides effective leadership on the shift Other duties as assigned and works overtime as required Boiler Technician 1 Major Duties: MN Boiler Chief A license required Responsible for all Boiler Technician 2 and 3 duties Oversees all shift activities relative to the operation of the boiler(s), turbine, generator, and associated equipment Responsible for all boiler personnel job assignments on shift; duties include but are not limited to: ash pulling, coal operation, cleaning, maintenance activities…etc.
Operates all boiler house equipment within conditions Provides leadership and development to lower-level boiler techs, serves as mentor Responsible for creating maintenance notifications Oversees and performs maintenance activities Monitors boiler, turbine generators and electrostatic precipitators to ensure optimum safe operation.
Reads the operating board and gauges, explains the use and meaning of all boiler house and turbine generator related equipment and appurtenance Monitors and operates boilers and turbine generators through computerized control systems regarding fuel air ratio, etc.
Responsible for start-up and shutdown of the boiler(s) and turbine(s); and warm-up, start-up, operation, emergency procedures, and shutdown of the soot blowers Completes all logs, checklists, etc.

Other duties as assigned and works overtime as required WORK ENVIRONMENT: Occasionally exposed to confined spaces, steam, and wet, humid, cold or extreme heat environments.
Job tasks are occasionally performed at high elevations, on uneven surfaces, and under severe loud noise conditions (above 85 dB) in which fall and hearing protection is required.
Employees may be required to enter boilers and tanks for inspections.
Occasional exposure to welding fumes, gases, vapors, and particulates requires respiratory protection.
Occasional exposure to vibration (power tools) and non-ionizing radiation (welding) requires anti-vibration gloves and welding shields/curtains.
Must be able to drive pick-ups, manlifts, and lift equipment.
Exposure to moving equipment requires lockout procedures.
PHYSICAL/COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to carry 50 pounds occasionally (lifting more than 50 pounds requires assistance).
Bending and twisting is done frequently while squatting and kneeling is done occasionally, stair climbing, and ladder climbing is required.
Wrist position deviates from neutral position frequently as does repetitive hand/wrist motion and use of hand tools.
Occasionally push or pull on carts, chains, pulleys, and come alongs.
Manual dexterity needed with frequent motor movement.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety procedures and SDS information, detailed blueprints, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to understand and carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
Must be able to drive a vehicle and operate a forklift safely.
